May’s “Grand” Lesson

We had the privilege of having two of our grandchildren stay with us for a few days this month which resulted in lots of “grand” adventures. One afternoon we took them (Addy – 8 and Jase – 5), to a river where they skipped rocks, played in the shallow water, and even built a sand castle of sorts. At one point, Jase found a fishing line and began to pull it free from the sand. Brent got involved in this process as he was concerned there might be a fishing hook still attached to the line. The line turned out to be quite long and there was no hook. Brent offered to make a fishing pole for Jase. He secured the line to a stick that was about 2 feet long and 2 inches in diameter. I wasn’t sure how this was supposed to work without a weight on the line. Not to worry. Jase had his own ideas. He threw the stick into the river and held onto the line. He would pull the stick back in from the river and yell, “Look! I caught a whale!” He did this repeatedly. “Look! I caught a shark!” “Look, I caught an alligator!” Interacting with him, I cautioned him, “Be careful, alligators are dangerous!” He said, “Don’t worry, Mamaw! I got this!” Eventually, the game changed. He began to throw the stick further out, casting it right into the strong current of the river. As the current carried the stick, Jase would run along the shore following it, while holding on tightly to the invisible line. He would run until Papaw would yell at him, “Come back, Jase, you’re getting too far away.” Jase would pull the stick back to shore, run back to us, throw with all his might, and follow it again as the current took it. I watched this scenario play out again and again.
The Lord began to talk to me about “casting my cares on Him.” We all do it. We cast our cares on Him. Unfortunately, we often remained tethered to the care by an invisible emotional line. We keep an eye on the care as the Lord takes it into His current. We watch to see what He will do with it. We even pull it back to check if something has changed. I can still hear Jase yelling, “Don’t worry, Mamaw, I got this!” That is what the Lord is saying, “Don’t worry, Debbie, I got this! Let me have it. Cut the tether. Cast your cares completely on Me. If you remain tethered, I cannot carry the burden.”
1 Peter 5:7 tells us to “Cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you.” When we hold tightly to that invisible emotional line, failing to release our care completely into His control, we become vulnerable to the enemy. Notice what the next verse says “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour.”
May's "Grand" Lesson: If you’re tethered to your care, your care is tethered to you. While your attention is on the care, the enemy will gain an advantage over you. Thank you, Jase!
