His Great Power

"The power of the Lord is great.

The Lord is slow to anger,

abounding in steadfast love,

forgiving iniquity and transgression …”

Numbers 14:17-18

Recently, Numbers 14:17-18 stood out to me, causing me to ponder His great power. This is what I gleaned. Verse 17: “The power of the Lord is great.”

Power – (Hebrew) vigor, capacity, force, might, strength

Great – (Hebrew) large, excellent, magnificent

Biblical Demonstrations of His “great power” (just a few):

  • He spoke and created

  • The 10 plagues inflicted on Egypt

  • Parting of the Red Sea & Jordan River

  • Manna

  • Water from a rock

  • The sun stood still

  • The ax head floated

  • Jesus’ immaculate conception

  • Water into wine

  • Jesus healed many

  • Jesus delivered many from demonic oppression/possession

  • Jesus’s resurrection

  • Jesus’s ascension

The Lord Jesus demonstrated great power, and said we would do even greater works: John 14:12, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”

His power is great. Ours is supposed to be greater. Why aren’t we seeing more miracles, signs, wonders, significant healings, and greater manifestations of His power through our own lives? Consider the next verse from Numbers:

The Lord is slow to anger,

abounding in steadfast love,

forgiving iniquity and transgression …”

Numbers 14:18

Slow to anger: To emulate the Lord and do even greater works than He did, we need to be slow to anger. Synonyms of anger are annoyed, wrath, rage, irritated, frustrated, and resentful. Antonyms of anger are calm, peaceful, forbearing, long-suffering, and patient. These antonyms align with the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5, especially peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control.

Abounding in steadfast love: Love is another fruit of the Spirit. Our love is often fickle and conditional. It is rarely unconditional and steadfast. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; ...” (Lamentations 3:22-23). His love and mercy never cease; they are new every morning. To emulate this kind of love, we must have our love renewed by Him daily.

Not only does He love never cease, but He abounds in it. Abound means to be heavy & weighty. His love is heavy and weighs Him down. In other words, love is His motivation. Selah.

Forgiving iniquity and transgression: God forgives our sins and even shed His blood to make forgiveness available to us. How quick are we to forgive? Do we carry offense against anyone?

When it comes to demonstrating His great power, these three areas have a tremendous impact on our effectiveness.

1.     Are we walking in peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control?

2.     Is love our motivation?

3.     Do we carry offence against anyone?

These are good questions to ask Holy Spirit. Sit with Him and ask Him to search your heart. The power of the Lord is great. Let’s not let anything dilute or hinder it.
