Awaken to His Love

In honor of Valentine’s Day, let’s make sure that we are “Awake to His Love.”
In Song of Solomon 5:2, the Shulamite woman is asleep in bed. She hears her beloved’s voice. “Beloved” means my lover and refers to Solomon, who is a metaphor of Jesus. He calls out to her, saying, “Open to me.” Jesus wants her/us to open the door to intimacy with Him. He wants her/us to awaken to His love.
The fact that she was asleep indicates that her love and passion for Him had waned, grown stale, or lukewarm. Scripture warns us in the parable of the 10 virgins that when the Bridegroom comes, He will find some sleeping.
Jesus calls out to her, and He knocks on the door. He is a gentleman. He does not demand intimacy with us, but He desires it. He wants her to open the door. He stands at the door and knocks. At the door of our heart, He knocks. He knocks by His word and by Holy Spirit, by blessings, and even by afflictions. These things draw us to Him. He is a gentleman; He knocks.
He calls out to her/us with the most endearing phrases: “My sister, My love, My dove, My undefiled.”
“My sister” – Solomon had many wives; some were his half-sisters. Jesus said, “Whoever does the will of my Father is my brother, my sister, and my mother” (Matthew 12:50).
“My love” – Jesus calls her/us His intimate friend or My lover.
“My dove” – Doves mate for life. Jesus calls her/us “My mate forever.”
“My undefiled” – means complete, perfect, pure. In Jesus, we are complete, perfect, and pure.
His voice “awakened” her heart, her inner man, her spirit. The root word of “awakened” means “exposed” or “laid bare.” Her lukewarm love or passion for Him is laid bare; it’s exposed.
He pleads with her to open the door to her heart or spirit BECAUSE …
“His head is filled with dew & His locks (hair) with drops of the night.”
What does this mean? He wanted her to know what He went through, what He endured & suffered to be with her. He could be referring to that night in the garden where He prayed, cried, and sweat drops of blood as He contemplated the cross that He would endure for her/us. The crown of thorns placed on His head made His head and His hair drip with blood. In essence, He is saying,
“Consider what I went through to be intimate with you.
Please open the door to intimacy. Please Awaken to My love.”
